Travel & Tourism Industry Glossary  :  Referral

A sale that originates with a third party but where that third party is not an authorized agent of the tour operator.  These types of sales are generally commissionable or have some financial incentive associated with them.

Referrals are a popular method of driving sales from websites, concierges, or other third parties.  Generally speaking, the referring partner links to the tour operator’s website using a special link that has a referral code embedded in it.  The partner completes the booking on behalf of the customer by entering the customer’s information and payment details.  The booking is marked with the referral code so that the tour operator can produce a referral report.
