What is a POS?

Acronym for Point of Sale.  A software system that allows a tour or activity operator to sell their tours and activities directly to customers in person or over the phone, collect payments, and issue receipts/vouchers directly or via email.

Early point of sale systems were a combination of hardware and software and included cash drawers, bar code scanners, and credit card swipes.  Modern POS systems are web based and allow the tour operator to use any supported device such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.  Credit card swiping can often be supported using a third party service such as Square or a supported merchant processor.  Printing a voucher or receipt on site can be supported using the devices print capabilities.  POS systems that are designed exclusively for tours and activities support inventory management, pricing, booking management, and comprehensive reporting.
