For in-destination activities, tours, and attractions, “Free Sell” refers to the selling of tickets (seats) by a reseller or agent without any specific availability restrictions or, in some cases, a date requirement. Free sell is most common with agents or resellers who do not have the ability to check live availability with a supplier or who are selling general admission tickets such as theme parks or museum tickets. Many OTAs or reseller websites use Free Sell agreements when selling tickets on behalf of their supplier partners.
Free sell agency agreements are slowly being replaced by other contracts as suppliers require OTAs to connect to their live availability. For OTAs like Viator and Expedia that have supplier APIs, suppliers are encouraged to create live availability agreements and connect their reservation systems (like Rezgo). By using live availability, the suppliers are less likely to run into overbooking issues and the OTAs can provide instant confirmation for their customers.
