Behind the Smile: Juneau Whale Watch

Behind the Smile with Serene Hutchinson, Juneau Whale Watch

“We love people! We feel honored to provide experiences that are on many peoples bucket list.”

What is it about your location that makes you and your customers smile?

We are located in Juneau, Alaska a major port for cruise ships coming to Southeast Alaska.  Almost 1 million people arrive at our port and have 1 day to create memories and boy do they!  The highlights of our little city are the Mendenhall Glacier in the Tongass National Forest and world class whale watching.

Can you tell us more about Juneau Whale Watch?

We are a family business, started by a hippy kid from Hawaii. Sky came to Alaska with a duffel bag and and idea. Now he and his team get to show thousands of people a great time in Juneau every year!

What is it about whale watching that makes your customers smile?

We feature 3 main offerings.
1. A half-hourly shuttle from the cruise ship terminal to the stunning Mendenhall Glacier Park. Our fun and knowledgeable drivers will regale you with history and information about our Capital City and the surrounding natural phenomenons.
2. Juneau Whale Watching along the Inside passage. Juneau is one of the top 5 whale watching destinations in the world. Our custom designed boats offer great views, and the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.
3. New this year we have branched out into Skagway, another popular spot for cruise ships. We offer several tours via coach that follow the route of the historic Gold Rush. Venture out for 2.5 to 6 hours into the mighty Yukon!

Can you share an experience with your business that made you smile?

We had guests who skipped the cruise ship, flew up here for a week and went whale watching 12 times! They are whale lovers and they wanted to experience every boat in our fleet and each crew. They reminded us how lucky we are to live this life every day.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Showing people our wonderful town and our majestic residents, the humpback whales. Also we love building this family business and working with such a fun crew.

Can you share something about yourself that others may not know?

You can’t drive to Juneau, you have to come by boat or airplane. We DO have roads, but the main one is only 40 miles long.

If you could share one piece of advice for other tour or activity operators, what would it be?

Hire staff that you enjoy because during the season you are working hard and long hours together.
