For many travel suppliers, getting a merchant account that allows you to accept payments online can be difficult and expensive. Because of the nature of travel purchases (ie. large ticket items that are not delivered until later), the industry has been plagued with fraud. As a result of this high risk to the credit card companies, Visa and Mastercard make it virtually impossible for a travel supplier to get a merchant account without having to jump through some very big hoops. Luckily, there is another option that is much lower cost and very easy to integrate (especially into Rezgo.com). Paypal offers an online payment solution that only requires a credit card or bank account to verify the validity of your account. Over the last six months we have had many Rezgo.com users sign-up for Paypal in order to accept credit card payments online. In Canada and the U.S., the credit card fees are between 1.9% and 2.9% which (in Canada) is less than what you pay for a merchant account. The other benefit is that wire transfers from your Paypal account to your actual bank account are free for transfers over $150 and only $.50 for transfers that are less than $150. Again, in many cases, these fees are less than what you pay for a regular merchant account.

So how legitimate is a Paypal account? Well, many airlines and hotel websites are now accepting online payments with Paypal. If that doesn’t show how credible a Paypal payment solution really is, I don’t know what does.

To sign-up for a Paypal account now, go to the Paypal site. It takes about five minutes.
